For outerwear, 0.6 to 0.8 mm latex is the sweet spot. It keeps its shape, resists small creases, and feels sturdier than the 0.3–0.4 mm used for dresses or leggings. Heavy coats or trench-style pieces sometimes go up to 1 mm for a more structured look. Thinner latex looks sleek but scuffs easier and feels less protective outdoors.

Latex is naturally waterproof, so light rain won’t hurt it. However, it doesn’t breathe, so you’ll sweat underneath if the temperature is mild or warm. In cold weather, latex stiffens and can crack if folded while cold, so you’ll want to warm it slightly before putting it on. It’s not an ideal everyday shell like nylon or leather, but it can handle short outings or specific looks.

The shine is not permanent. It comes from silicone polish applied to the surface. Shiny latex gives that iconic wet-look gloss but requires upkeep to stay streak-free. Matte or chlorinated finishes feel smoother, attract less dust, and don’t need constant polishing, though they reflect less light. Both are the same material underneath; the finish just changes texture, look, and maintenance.

Fit matters a lot. Latex stretches, but only comfortably up to a point. Too tight stresses seams and zippers; too loose creates wrinkles and dulls the form-fitting effect. You generally should not size up, because well-made latex garments are cut to fit snugly once stretched on. If you’re between sizes or plan to wear layers underneath, a half size up is fine, but most people go true to size for a clean silhouette.
